Defending Against Global WordPress Brute Force Flood

There has been a massive distributed brute force attack being launched the past few days against every WordPress based website at every hosting provider on the Internet. Over 100,000 different IP addresses are currently attempting to guess the admin user’s password in every WordPress site. By default, WordPress cannot protect itself against this type of attack, but you can protect against this attack by following these steps:

1. Update to latest versions; remove unused plugins and themes.

Make sure WordPress, ALL of your plugins and theme are current. It’s so easy. Login to WordPress and go to Dashboard. If updates are available you are notified immediately. One click and you are done! No excuse in using an old, vulnerable version. Remove disabled plugins and themes. Besides removing a potential vulnerability risk you are also freeing up disk space.

NOTE: When choosing your plugins, read the reviews and check to see when the plugin was last updated. Old, outdated plugins may be vulnerable and present security risks.

2. Secure your password.

Don’t make it easy for a hacker to break into your site because you are using a simple password like “password123″! Choose a really strong password for your admin level user. Long, completely random jumbles are the best, because they cannot be quickly guessed in a dictionary attack. Don’t use plain English words. Remember, 20+ character random jumbles are drastically more secure than simple passwords like “qwerty” or “password123″. The Bitmill Inc. has an online strong password generator tool that is free to use.

For your admin level username, do NOT use “admin”. If it is currently “admin”, change it to something else. To do this, create another administrator user and then login as the new administrator user and delete the “admin” user. At the time of deletion, you’ll be prompted to “Delete all posts.” or “Attribute all posts to:” another user. Make sure to attribute all posts to the new administrator user.

3. Monitor your website for exploits and blacklistings.

Get alerted when your website is hacked or has been blacklisted. 4. Keep your local machine secure.

Keep your personal computer safe and secure by installing the latest software, updates, and patches. Setup your machine to run automatic updates so you don’t have to think about it. Install an anti-virus software such as McAfee.
