How to set up an Alias from your web interface.

Step 1 of 1

1. Definition for Alias: An alias is an alternate address that can be used to address email messages to an individual.

2. Note: You can address mail to an alias, however you can not download mail sent to an alias@ your domain unless you forward the mail addressed to the alias to a valid email (pop) account.

3. Example: If your domain name is “domain.com” and you want to receive mail sent to “john@domain.com”, you would create a user called “john”. However, when you attempt to create this user from your control panel, you would probably receive the error message “user already exists”. For security reasons, all user ids on a server must be unique since your domain is hosted on a shared server with other domains. Since “john” is a common name, it is probably being used by another domain.

4. If you receive such an error, you would need to create a user with a name that is not already in use, such as “johnr” for example. Then you would redirect mail sent to the alias “john” to the vaild email account you created for “johnr”.

5. To forward mail sent to the alias “john@domain.com” to the valid email account for “johnr@domain.com” do the following:
Log into your plusmail control panel and click on the link entitled “Email Forwarding” found on the left of the screen. See diagram below for an example:

6. In the first available “Address” field, enter the name “john”. To the right of that, in the “Forward To:” field; enter “johnr@domain.com”. See diagram below for an example:

7. This will forward all mail sent to “john@domain.com” to the valid email account of “johnr@domian.com”. You will then be able to set up your email program to download the mail sent to “johnr@domian.com”, thereby receiving email sent to the alias of “john@domain.com”.

8. The steps above will allow you to create an alias and receive email sent to this alias. In our example above “john” would be the alias name.
